China's new autumn break:
dates, rules and outdoor plans
A wave of Chinese cities confirmed school autumn breaks for November 2026. Shenzhen's compulsory schools close from 17 to 20 November, which with the weekend gives families six days off; Foshan, Qingyuan, Chengdu, Ningbo and Changsha set similar dates in the same month. It is a school holiday, not a public one, so dates differ by city.
What China's autumn break actually is
On 9 October 2026 the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau announced that every compulsory-education school in the city, public and private, would run a fixed autumn break and a fixed spring break. Kindergartens may follow; senior high schools decide for themselves. Shenzhen's autumn break runs from Tuesday 17 to Friday 20 November 2026, and with the following weekend it gives families six consecutive days.
It is not a public holiday. Nothing closes. Offices, shops, museums and trains keep their normal timetable, which is precisely why the week behaves so differently from Golden Week: the crowds that fill China in the first week of October are simply not there.
The same fortnight, a dozen other cities published their own dates. Chengdu, Zigong and Panzhihua in Sichuan, Ningbo in Zhejiang, Changsha, Hengyang and Zhuzhou in Hunan, Yuncheng in Shanxi, Fuzhou in Fujian, and Foshan, Qingyuan and Yunfu in Guangdong all placed autumn breaks in November 2026.
The dates to check, by city
Because the break is set city by city, two families in the same province can end up a week apart. The table below collects the dates published on 9 and 10 October 2026.
Read the third column carefully before you book. A three-day break and a six-day run are very different holidays, and only some cities stitch the school days onto a weekend.
| Where the school is | Autumn break dates | Days off with the weekend |
|---|---|---|
| Shenzhen, Guangdong Province | Tuesday 17 to Friday 20 November 2026 | six days off in a row |
| Foshan, Guangdong Province | Wednesday 11 to Friday 13 November 2026 | five days off in a row |
| Qingyuan, Guangdong Province | Wednesday 18 to Friday 20 November 2026 | five days, with final-year pupils excluded |
| Yunfu, Guangdong Province | Monday 9 to Tuesday 10 November 2026 | four days joined to the earlier weekend |
| Chengdu and Panzhihua, Sichuan Province | three days in the third week of November 2026 | five days once paired with a weekend |
| Zigong, Sichuan Province | Monday 16 to Wednesday 18 November 2026 | five days, with senior years excluded |
| Ningbo, Zhejiang Province | Wednesday 25 to Friday 27 November 2026 | five days off in a row |
| Changsha, Hunan Province | 12, 13 and 16 November 2026 | three separate days, no long run |
| Yuncheng, Shanxi Province | 5, 6 and 9 November 2026 | five days arranged around a weekend |
| Fuzhou, Fujian Province | district by district, between 16 and 25 November 2026 | five days in most districts |
These dates come from official announcements published on 9 and 10 October 2026 and can be adjusted later. Confirm the current version with your own school and its local education bureau before you book anything non-refundable.
Why the calendar changed
The education bureau's wording is unusually specific. The break exists to broaden student practice, to develop the whole child, and to answer national policy encouragement for autumn and spring breaks. Qingyuan's accompanying questions and answers add the mechanics: schools may not use the days for extra lessons, tests or make-up sessions, and the break is drawn from the school year's flexible days rather than from teaching time.
That matters to us because it names the thing we do. Schools now tell parents, in writing, that the break is a good moment for nature observation and outdoor exercise. For a family that already hikes, camps and watches birds, the autumn break stops being a scheduling problem and becomes the best-planned week of the term.
What families actually do with it
November is the strongest outdoor month in south China, and the climate record supports it. Shenzhen's 1991 to 2020 averages put the November daily mean at 21.7 °C, with 31.7 mm of rain and 168.8 hours of sunshine: dry, bright and mild, with the typhoon season behind you and the humidity of summer gone.
The trick with a six-day window is to spend it on one thing rather than four. What works by age:
- Ages 3 to 6: flat greenways, tide pools and farm parks. The 9.4 km greenway at Maluanshan has short, gentle sections, and Shenzhen's wetland parks run family programmes through the winter.
- Ages 6 to 9: the Dapeng Peninsula coast and the 867 m Qiniang Mountain, climbed early and slowly. The city's new natural history museum is the wet-weather fallback.
- Ages 9 to 14: the Dongchong to Xichong coastal traverse, night walks for insects and frogs, and a first supervised overnight camp.
One collision to plan around
Shenzhen's six days overlap the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, which the city hosts on 18 and 19 November 2026. Both dates sit inside the break.
The municipal People's Congress has authorised temporary administrative measures covering public safety, city management and traffic, in force until 30 November 2026, and the metro has run bag-by-bag security checks since July 2026. Expect tighter screening, more road controls around the Futian and Nanshan districts, and hotels filling early. Book accommodation and intercity trains as soon as your school confirms, and keep the last day of the break loose.
APEC-week arrangements are temporary and are published close to the date. Treat the points above as a planning signal rather than a fixed list, and check city notices in early November 2026.
The rules that bite in November
Two seasonal rules catch families out in the cooler half of the year, and one of them is a standing local regulation rather than a temporary notice.
| What you plan to do | The rule to know | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Light a camp stove or charcoal fire on forest land | Banned throughout the special protection period, which runs from 1 October to 30 April | Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Forest Fire Prevention Regulations |
| Drive to the Dapeng Peninsula at a weekend | The seasonal vehicle booking ran from 1 May to 7 October 2026, so November needs no permit; the notice is reissued annually | Shenzhen traffic police notice |
| Take a boat out or swim at an unstaffed beach | The sea stays mild, but patrols and services thin out after October | Our own operating practice on the Dapeng coast |
| Leave at dawn for a ridge walk | November mornings bring coastal haze and damp rock; start after eight or carry a lamp | Shenzhen Meteorological Bureau climate summary |
What the break does not solve
The autumn break is generous, but it is not a solution to everything, and families should know what it leaves untouched.
- It is not national. Cities set their own dates, and this year they run from 5 November in Yuncheng to 27 November in Ningbo, so a family split between two cities may not overlap at all.
- Senior high schools are excluded in Shenzhen, and several other cities leave final-year pupils out in writing.
- Working parents gain a holiday, not extra childcare. These are school days off, so no employer is obliged to release anyone.
- It is not uniformly quiet. Late November brings the first cold fronts, and the Dapeng coast can be windy even when the city itself is warm.
- It changes demand. Once a dozen cities publish the same few weeks, camps, hotels and trains in the second half of November fill faster than they did in 2025.
How we know these dates
We have run outdoor and travel programmes from Shenzhen for 16 years, across 40 journeys and 11 camps, with more than 8,000 families. We are a Shenzhen operator, so the city calendar above is our own working year rather than a translation of somebody else's list. Groups move at a staff-to-child ratio of 7 to 1, and our equipment meets CE and UIAA standards.
That is also why we publish dates like these at all. A break that arrives once a year is worth planning around properly, and the planning is easier when the numbers come from the bureau rather than from a brochure.
Frequently asked questions
When is China's school autumn break in 2026?
Most cities that have published dates place it in November 2026. Shenzhen runs 17 to 20 November, Foshan 11 to 13 November, Qingyuan 18 to 20 November, Ningbo 25 to 27 November, and Changsha on 12, 13 and 16 November. Dates are set locally, so check your own city rather than a national list.
Is the autumn break a public holiday in China?
No. It is a school calendar change, not a statutory holiday. The last national public holiday of 2026 is National Day, which ended on 7 October; the next one is New Year 2027. Offices, shops and transport run normally throughout the autumn break.
Do Chinese schools also get a spring break?
In Shenzhen, yes: the spring break is set for 1 and 2 April 2027, with no make-up school days afterwards. Other cities are still confirming their 2027 spring dates, because those depend on the national public holiday calendar for 2027.
Do we need a permit to visit the Dapeng Peninsula in November 2026?
No. The seasonal vehicle booking ran from 1 May to 7 October 2026, and Shenzhen's traffic police confirmed that short school breaks later in the year fall outside that window. The notice is reissued every year, so confirm the current version before you drive.
Is November a good month for outdoor activities with children in Shenzhen?
It is one of the best. Shenzhen's 1991 to 2020 averages for November are a daily mean of 21.7 °C, 31.7 mm of rain and 168.8 hours of sunshine. Typhoon season has passed, and forest fire rules rather than heat become the main constraint on open fires.

What this means for your family
China's autumn break is a school calendar change, not a public holiday, and in 2026 it landed in November for a dozen cities at once. Shenzhen's version is the longest at six days, from 17 to 22 November, and it overlaps the APEC leaders' meeting on 18 and 19 November. Book the train and the hotel once your school confirms, put the Dapeng coast on a weekday, keep open fires off forest land until 30 April, and treat the dates here as the starting point rather than the final word.
