Golden Week, 1 to 7 October, is China's busiest travel week: 888 million domestic trips in 2025. Families can go — more than 70 per cent of holiday travellers are family groups — but the difference between a good trip and a miserable one is which days you pick and what you book first.

What Golden Week 2026 actually is

Golden Week is China's National Day holiday, fixed at 1 to 7 October. In 2026 it sits unusually close to the Mid-Autumn Festival, which runs 25 to 27 September, with three workdays in between on 28 to 30 September. Chinese families who take those three days as leave get thirteen days off in a row, which is why the phrase 'request 3, rest 13' has dominated domestic travel planning since August. Two makeup workdays, Sunday 20 September and Saturday 10 October, pay for the National Day break.

For visitors the practical effect is two holiday peaks with a quiet three-day gap between them. In 2025, when the two festivals merged into one eight-day break, the country recorded 888 million domestic trips and 809 billion yuan of tourism spending, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism; transport authorities counted 2.43 billion cross-regional journeys.

What the crowds actually look like

The 888 million trips in 2025 were up 123 million on 2024, and everything published for 2026 points the same way. A trend report from Guangzhou-based operator GZL found family and three-generation groups make up more than 70 per cent of domestic travellers over the break, with prices across the market expected to run about 5 per cent below 2025. Small family groups of two to six people grew 132 per cent last summer while coach tours of more than 20 people fell 18 per cent, according to China Tourism Academy monitoring the report cites.

For a visiting family the meaning is simple. You will not be alone; you will be among people doing exactly what you are doing. That is why the day-by-day calendar below matters more than any blanket 'avoid Golden Week' advice.

The four-wave structure is new for 2026: in 2025 the two festivals overlapped into a single eight-day peak, so there was no bridge window at all.

The honest answer: come, but pick your days

If your dates are locked to 1-7 October, do not plan a multi-city route. Pick one base city, book day trips from it, and put indoor anchors — museums, aquariums, science centres — on 1 to 3 October, when headline attractions run at or near capacity. Go outdoors early: domestic tour groups arrive from about 09:00, so a 07:30 start buys two quieter hours. Keep 4 to 7 October for the marquee sights, when the pressure drops.

If you have any flexibility, shift the trip. Arriving on 28 to 30 September gives you the quiet bridge days. Arriving from 8 October gives you normal prices, and late October in the south is genuinely good — drier, milder, and the start of the migratory bird season on Shenzhen Bay. The week of 1 October is the worst week of the Chinese year to see the Great Wall or the Forbidden City with children; the Forbidden City alone caps daily entries at 80,000, and holiday quotas clear early.

Driving to the beach in Shenzhen? Book the road first

This is the constraint almost no English guide mentions, and the one we answer questions about most. On every weekend and public holiday, the Dapeng Peninsula southeast of Shenzhen — the beaches at Xichong and Jiaochangwei, the 600-year-old Dapeng Fortress, the hikes below Qiniang Mountain at 867 metres — sits inside a traffic control zone covering all roads south of the Diefushan Tunnel. Any passenger vehicle with nine seats or fewer needs a free advance reservation, local plates included.

Mid-Autumn slots opened on 20 September; National Day slots open on 28 September and the popular windows go first. Cancelling three times costs the holiday's booking rights, and three no-shows in a year lose the right to book at all. The control is reissued every year, so confirm the current notice on the traffic police account before you drive.

What to book, and by when

Everything sells out from the top down, in a predictable order.

One booking families forget is restaurants. On holiday, Chinese families eat lunch around 12:00 and dinner around 18:00, and family restaurants in destination areas hit capacity at exactly those hours. Eating at 11:30 or 17:30 is the cheapest crowd-avoidance trick there is.

One more date to know: the fire season starts 1 October

The same day Golden Week begins, Shenzhen's forest fire special protection period also begins, running to 30 April. Inside forest areas — all woodland plus a 50-metre buffer — camp stoves, charcoal, barbecues and lighters are banned, and checkpoints collect fire sources on the way in. Who should skip 1-7 October altogether

For everyone else the break is survivable and can even be fun. The festive mood is real, museums run special exhibitions, and there is no better week to watch the country move. Book earlier than feels necessary, start earlier than feels reasonable, and pick your days from the calendar above rather than fighting all seven.

What this means for our own programmes

During Golden Week we follow the same calendar described here: we do not move groups between cities on 1 to 3 October, our forest programmes follow the fire-season rules from 1 October, and any day involving the Dapeng roads is built around the reservation system. Do I need a reservation to drive to Dapeng or the Shenzhen beaches?

For the Dapeng Peninsula, yes: on weekends and public holidays, all roads south of the Diefushan Tunnel require a free advance reservation for vehicles with nine seats or fewer, local plates included, and driving without one costs 300 yuan and one point. Dameisha and Xiaomeisha beaches dropped their reservation requirement on 1 May 2026.

Are Chinese highways free during Golden Week?

Yes. From 1 to 7 October, tolls are waived for passenger cars with seven seats or fewer. The Mid-Autumn holiday on 25-27 September is not a toll-free period; only Spring Festival, Qingming, Labour Day and National Day are.

When is a better time for a family trip to China?

Late October to November: the south is dry and mild, crowds and prices are back to normal, and migratory birds return to Shenzhen Bay from November. March and April are the other good window. Avoid Chinese New Year, which falls in February in 2027.
