Chinese New Year in Shenzhen
with Kids (2027)

Yes. Shenzhen is among the easier Chinese cities to visit with kids at Chinese New Year. The festival peaks on 6 February 2027; the migrant city empties and crowds thin, while winter stays mild at 19 to 22 degrees. Sights, malls and the metro stay open. Book ahead and expect some eateries to close.

Is Chinese New Year a good time to bring kids to Shenzhen?

The short answer is yes, with one caveat: plan around the closures. In 2027 the Lunar New Year falls on Saturday 6 February, the start of the Year of the Goat, with New Year's Eve on Friday 5 February. Unlike Beijing or Xi'an, which fill with domestic tourists during the holiday, Shenzhen is a migrant city. During the festival millions of residents travel home, so the place partly empties.

For families that calm is the winning feature. Metro cars have seats, roads are quieter, and the usual crowd spots such as Window of the World and the Safari Park are far less packed than in summer. Our own team, mostly migrants themselves, largely heads home too. The city breathes out for a week, and that is exactly the version of Shenzhen that works for children who tire in queues.

The festival date is fixed by the lunar calendar (6 February 2027), but the exact public-holiday window is set each year by China's State Council and usually announced in November. Confirm the precise days and any bridge holidays before you book flights.

The weather: a mild, dry winter

Shenzhen winter is the most comfortable and the driest season of the year. Using 1991 to 2020 normals from the Shenzhen Meteorological Bureau, January runs a mean high of 19.8 degrees Celsius and a low of 13.0; February 20.8 and 14.2; December 21.5 and 14.5. Annual rainfall is 1,932.9 millimetres, but winter is parched. Just 29.6 millimetres fall in December, 35.2 in January and 36.8 in February.

Practically, you need a light jacket for evenings, not a winter coat. The honest limit is a cold front that can briefly pull lows into single digits for a few days. The city's record low was 0.2 degrees Celsius back in February 1957. Pack one warm layer and check the seven-day forecast before you fly.

What stays open, and what quietly closes

The pattern is consistent across Chinese cities. Staying open through the holiday are the major attractions. Window of the World, Happy Valley, the Safari Park and Xiaomeisha Sea World all keep running, alongside shopping malls, the metro, chain hotels, and convenience stores such as 7-Eleven, FamilyMart and Meiyijia.

What closes is smaller and local. Family-run restaurants and neighbourhood shops often shut for the first three days, from New Year's Eve to Day 2, reopening around Day 5. Government offices and some banks keep holiday hours. The festive things, temple fairs, lantern displays and the reunion-dinner buzz, are exactly what stays open, and that is where the holiday actually shows up.

If your hotel sits away from a tourist strip, stock a few snacks and map the open spots nearby before Day 1, so a tired child is never stranded near a shuttered street.

Where to take the kids in Shenzhen

Shenzhen stacks family attractions close together. Window of the World packs more than 130 miniature landmarks with an evening light-and-fountain show. Happy Valley has over 100 rides split into gentle and thrill zones. The Safari Park holds more than 10,000 animals across 300-plus species, including giant pandas, on a drive-through path. Xiaomeisha Sea World, reopened in phases from late 2025, adds a whale and dolphin pavilion. The Ping An Financial Centre's 116th-floor deck gives a bird's-eye view across to the Hong Kong skyline.

For the outdoors, head east to the Dapeng Peninsula. Beaches at Xichong and Dameisha, the 867 metre Qiniang Mountain, and the 9.4 kilometre Malianshan greenway await. Across our 11 camps and 40 guided journeys we use these same coasts and hills, and in the festival's calm they are especially relaxed. Shenzhen Bay Park offers flat mangrove boardwalks and room to fly a kite. OCT Wetland Park, reservation-only, has bird-watching hides.

How we help international families on the ground

We have run family programmes in China for 16 years and guided more than 8,000 families, many arriving from abroad with children aged 3 to 14. Across our 11 camps and 40 guided journeys, from the Dapeng Peninsula to the 867 metre Qiniang Mountain, Chinese New Year questions come up on nearly every pre-trip call. Will it be too crowded, will things be open, what should we pack. Our leaders carry the current opening hours and brief each family before they set out.

Our 7 published field notes also flag the practical edges. Book transport and hotels early, keep a paper copy of key documents, and reach the airport earlier than you think a family needs. None of this is travel law. It is the routine that keeps a tired child and a stack of passports moving through immigration without drama.

Honest limits: who should plan extra time

This is operational guidance from a tour operator, not legal or official advice. Holiday dates and venue hours change. Confirm the 2027 public-holiday window with the State Council notice and check each venue's Chinese New Year opening times before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

When is Chinese New Year 2027?

The Lunar New Year falls on Saturday 6 February 2027, the start of the Year of the Goat, with New Year's Eve on Friday 5 February. The official public-holiday window is set yearly by China's State Council, usually about a week including weekend swaps, and is typically announced in November. Confirm the exact days before booking.

Is Shenzhen very crowded during Chinese New Year?

Less than most Chinese cities. Shenzhen is a migrant city, so during the festival millions of residents travel home and the city partly empties. Metro cars have seats and roads are calmer. The busy stretch is the domestic tourism surge around Days 4 to 7, when scenic spots fill. Do major sights early or on Days 1 to 3.

What is the weather like in Shenzhen at Chinese New Year?

Mild and dry. Daytime highs run about 19 to 22 degrees Celsius in December to February and nights 13 to 14. You need a light jacket, not a winter coat. A cold front can briefly drop lows to single digits, so pack one warm layer and check the forecast before you fly.

Will restaurants and shops be open?

Major attractions, malls, the metro, chain hotels and convenience stores stay open. Small family-run restaurants and neighbourhood shops often close for the first three days, from New Year's Eve to Day 2, reopening around Day 5. Temple fairs and lantern shows stay open, and that is where the festival lives.

Is Shenzhen a good base for kids at Chinese New Year compared with Beijing or Shanghai?

For families wanting calm, yes. Beijing fills with domestic tourists and its temple fairs are packed. Shanghai also empties like Shenzhen but has less traditional fair culture. Shenzhen offers mild weather, short queues, beaches and parks, and easy day trips to Hong Kong. A low-stress festive base if you book ahead.
