Here is which one protects your first day.

Fly into Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX) if your airline serves it: one terminal, a metro line under the arrivals floor, and no border to cross. Choose Hong Kong (HKG) only for long-haul routes, and budget two to four extra hours plus one more immigration stop. Guangzhou (CAN) suits families adding a second city.

Three airports, three different jobs

Families flying to Shenzhen land at one of three airports, and the choice is not really about distance. Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX) sits 32 kilometres northwest of the city centre in Bao'an District and handles every passenger flight through a single terminal, T3. Hong Kong International (HKG) is 38 kilometres to the south and is the long-haul gateway for southern China. Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) is 99 kilometres to the north, is China Southern's hub, and has the deepest domestic network of the three.

What separates them for a family is not the flight time. It is whether you have to cross a border between the aircraft and the hotel.

Shenzhen Bao'an opened a third runway in November 2025 and still runs all commercial flights through Terminal 3, so there is no inter-terminal transfer to manage. That single detail matters more than it sounds when you are moving a family through an airport.

What arrives new in late 2026

Route capacity into Shenzhen is widening. Shenzhen Airlines opens a direct Shenzhen to Sydney service on 14 December 2026, four times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, flown by an Airbus A330. Outbound ZH815 leaves at 00:20 and lands at 13:40, about ten hours and twenty minutes; the return ZH816 departs Sydney at 22:30 and arrives at 05:25 the next morning. It is the airline's second direct Australian route after Melbourne, and from 25 October 2026 the Melbourne service rises from three flights a week to five.

For a family coming from Australia this removes a transfer through another hub, which is the single largest reduction in travel time you can buy. It is also worth knowing that Chinese entry policy is in a widening phase rather than a tightening one: 23.72 million visa-free entries were recorded from January to August 2026, and the 240-hour transit scheme now covers 57 countries.

Two dates to hold: 25 October 2026 for the extra Melbourne frequencies and 14 December 2026 for the first Sydney departure. Schedules and frequencies change, so confirm with the airline before you build a trip around them.

Landing at Shenzhen Bao'an with children

Terminal 3 handles arrivals and the transport options sit directly below it. Metro Line 11 stops at Airport Station on the basement level of T3 and runs into the city without a change. A taxi or a ride-hailing car takes 30 to 45 minutes to central Shenzhen depending on traffic.

Children ride the Shenzhen metro free below 1.2 metres and at half fare between 1.2 and 1.5 metres. Payment is by Alipay, WeChat Pay or a Shenzhen Tong card rather than cash, so setting up a mobile wallet before you fly is the real prerequisite for a smooth arrival.

Transferring from Hong Kong to Shenzhen

If your flight lands at Hong Kong, you have three real options and one commonly misunderstood one. The land routes, a cross-border coach or a private car, mean clearing Hong Kong immigration and then mainland immigration at a land port, with your own luggage in between. The ferry is different: it is a genuine transit, and that distinction is what makes it worth the fare for a family with small children.

On the ferry you clear customs, immigration and quarantine once, at the wharf, and a free shuttle drops you at the airport. With a toddler, one immigration queue instead of two is the whole argument.

The trap: the SkyPier ferry is for transit passengers only, meaning travellers who already hold an onward booking through that same system, and it is not a way to visit Hong Kong itself. If you are starting in Hong Kong city rather than connecting at the airport, this service does not apply to you. For an airport-to-airport ferry transfer, allow three to four hours of connection time.

The 240-hour transit rule that catches families

China's 240-hour visa-free transit now covers 57 countries and 65 open ports across 24 provinces, and Shenzhen holds two of them: Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport and Shekou Port. Transit travellers entering through Guangdong may also leave from any open port in the province, which lets you exit through Hong Kong, China, or Macao, China instead of doubling back.

The rule families get wrong is not the length of the stay but the routing. You must be travelling from one country or region to a different one, so the place you arrive from and the place you fly on to cannot be the same. A return trip that starts and ends in one country does not qualify. The clock is also stranger than it looks: it starts at midnight on the day after you arrive, which in practice gives you ten usable days rather than ten from the moment you land.

Because the exemption depends on your ticket, the onward booking has to exist before you board. If your plans are loose, the 30-day unilateral visa-free entry open to around 50 countries is the simpler instrument for most families, but note that its current round expires on 31 December 2026. Rules in this area change often, so treat everything here as the position in September 2026 and confirm it against the National Immigration Administration before you book.

What we see in practice

We run 40 multi-day journeys and 11 camps across China for children aged 3 to 14, with roughly one staff member for every seven children, and we have been operating for 16 years with more than 8,000 families through our programmes. Our own base is on the Dapeng Peninsula, on the eastern side of the city, which makes us the people waiting at the other end of your transfer.

Two things we have learned. Families who fly into Shenzhen Bao'an start their first day on time; families who fly into Hong Kong and transfer almost never do. And the arrival day should not carry any programme at all. Build it in as a soft day, because an immigration queue with tired children is not a memory anyone wants to keep.

Who this does not suit

Shenzhen is not a difficult city to arrive in. It is one of the easier ones in Asia, and Bao'an is one of the few airports anywhere with a metro station directly under the arrivals floor. But the specific combination of a Hong Kong flight, a land transfer and a tired child on the first night is where family itineraries fall apart, which is why the airport decision belongs before every other booking.

How do I get from Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen with children?

Three ways. A cross-border coach takes about 1 hour 15 minutes between the two airports, stops while you clear the border, and costs 90 yuan. The Shekou ferry from the airport's SkyPier takes about 30 minutes and drops you in Nanshan; the Fuyong service connects the two airports and clears customs, immigration and quarantine once, at the wharf. A taxi via Huanggang Port is the fallback, because it is the only 24-hour land crossing.

Does the 240-hour visa-free transit work if I fly home the same way I arrived?

No. The exemption is for transit, so the country or region you arrive from and the country or region you depart to must be different. Flying London to Shenzhen and back to London does not qualify. Arriving from Hong Kong and leaving to Hong Kong does not qualify either. The 240 hours also start at midnight on the day after arrival, which gives ten usable days.

Can children use the 240-hour visa-free transit?

Yes. The exemption applies per passport rather than per family, and every child needs their own passport. Mixed-nationality families should check each child separately, because one child may qualify while another does not. A child travelling with only one parent may also be asked for supporting documents, such as a birth certificate or written consent from the other parent.

Is the ferry from Shenzhen to Hong Kong a way to see Hong Kong?

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. The SkyPier and Fuyong ferry services exist for transit passengers who already hold an onward flight booked through the same system. If your goal is to visit Hong Kong, use the land border crossings or a direct coach instead.
