Shenzhen with kids
— a 3 to 5 day plan that fits ages 3 to 14
Plan three days for a first Shenzhen trip with kids, or five with the Dapeng Peninsula. The city mixes easy urban hits — Safari Park, Window of the World — with real nature: Shenzhen Bay birds, Dapeng beaches, the 867 m Qiniang summit. Match each day to the child's age (3–14) and the season.
Three days is enough — five opens Dapeng
Shenzhen is an easy first China stop for families. It is compact, clean and metro-linked, and sits 40 minutes from Hong Kong by high-speed rail, so even a short visit fits a lot in. Over 16 years we have guided more than 8,000 families here, and the sweet spot for a relaxed trip with children aged 3 to 14 is three full days — or five if you stay overnight on the Dapeng Peninsula.
The trick is to pair one 'wow' urban attraction per day with something outdoors, and to let the child's age set the pace. The city also has indoor rescue options for a rainy or too-hot day — science museums, aquariums and the large Happy Valley and Window of the World parks — so a plan rarely collapses. Below is a route we have road-tested with our own groups, plus the option to hand the planning to one of our camps.
Shenzhen gets hot and humid from June to August, and its parks and attractions swell during the National Day holiday (October 1 to 7) and the Chinese New Year break. Aim for October to April, and avoid the big holiday weeks if you can. Visa rules change, so confirm entry terms with China's National Immigration Administration before you book.
A ready-made 3-day plan (ages 3 to 14)
Distances are short and the metro reaches almost everything. This plan keeps mornings outdoors and afternoons flexible, which suits tired little legs. Swap any day for a museum or a mall playground if the weather turns; Shenzhen is forgiving that way.
| Day | Where to go | Best for | Why kids like it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Shenzhen Bay Park and the mangrove boardwalk | Ages 3 and up | Flat paths, egrets and Black-faced Spoonbills from November to March |
| Day 2 | Shenzhen Safari Park, near 1,000 animals | Ages 3 and up | Giant pandas, giraffes and a train ride through the open enclosures |
| Day 3 | Window of the World, over 130 miniature landmarks | Ages 5 and up | A walk through famous sights, plus shows and a snow dome |
Add two days on the Dapeng Peninsula
Dapeng is Shenzhen's coastal escape, about 90 minutes from the city centre. It gives you beaches, a 600-year-old walled city, and — for fit pre-teens — the 867 m Qiniang summit, the highest point on the peninsula. We run a coastal traverse and an island camp here, and the ancient city is a rare chance for children to walk a real Ming-dynasty street.
Dapeng rewards a slow pace. The beaches are calmer than the city's, the seafood is fresh, and the old town is walkable with a pushchair on its main lanes. Do not try to see it as a day trip from downtown; the drive alone eats half a morning.
- Day 4: Dapeng ancient city and a beach morning — gentle for all ages 3 to 14.
- Day 5: a guided coastal walk, or for ages 10 and up, the Qiniang ascent with our leaders.
- Stay overnight; the peninsula is too far to enjoy as a day trip from the city.
- Book transport and any guided climb ahead, because access is limited and weather-driven.
Or hand it to one of our camps or journeys
If you would rather not plan, we run 11 camps and 40 guided journeys for children aged 3 to 14, at about 7 children per trained leader, with climbing gear certified to CE-UIAA standards and English-speaking staff. Our 7 Field Notes cover everything from Shenzhen Bay birdwatching to the Qiniang summit. Small groups mean a worried parent can reach a leader in minutes, and our medical and insurance cover is included.
A few programmes that pair well with a Shenzhen visit:
- Shenzhen Summer or Winter Camp, 6 days and 5 nights, ages 7 to 14, at our Dapeng base.
- Guizhou Astronomy and Earth Science Camp, 5 days and 4 nights, ages 8 to 14, with the FAST telescope.
- Tengger Desert Family Nature Camp, 5 days and 4 nights, for families with kids 6 and up.
- Wailingding Island Independent Camp, 3 days and 2 nights, ages 8 to 14, a first camp away from home.
Camp dates, locations and prices are set per season, so treat the ages and lengths above as a guide and confirm the current programme and price with us before you book. We welcome more than 8,000 families a year and have 16 years of operation behind every trip.
When to go, and what it costs
Shenzhen is a year-round city, but the comfortable window is October to April; summer is for indoor parks and early-morning beach walks only. Attraction prices below are typical adult or per-person rates in RMB from major ticketing platforms — always confirm the current price with the official seller before you go. City transport, metro and cheap local food keep daily extras low.
| What to do | Typical price (RMB) |
|---|---|
| Shenzhen Safari Park, near 1,000 animals | About 199 RMB for an adult, 140 for a child |
| Xiaomeisha Ocean World, more than 200 species | About 230 RMB per person |
| Window of the World, over 130 miniature landmarks | From 99 RMB for a night ticket |
| Happy Valley Shenzhen, rides and shows | From 159 RMB per person |
| Shenzhen Bay Park and Dapeng ancient city | Free to enter |
Our camps and journeys are priced per programme and season — we do not publish a single flat rate, so ask us for a quote. A family of three can eat well for under 200 RMB a meal at many local spots, which keeps a five-day trip affordable.
Honest limits — who should wait
Shenzhen is friendly and safe by big-city standards, but it is not friction-free for every family. Say so up front: the heat, the crowds, the language gap, and the fact that taxis rarely carry child car seats all shape the trip. None of these is a deal-breaker, but they are worth planning around.
- If your child hates heat or crowds, skip summer and the holiday weeks; pick cooler months and quiet parks.
- If you need a car seat, bring a lightweight travel harness — local ride-hails almost never have one.
- If nobody in the family reads Chinese, pre-load an offline translation app and save hotel names in characters.
- If your child is under 3, keep to the bay, the parks and the museums; save the summits and islands for later.
- Confirm visa and entry rules with China's National Immigration Administration, because they change.
Frequently asked questions
How many days in Shenzhen with kids is enough?
Three full days cover the essentials — Shenzhen Bay, the Safari Park and Window of the World — for most children aged 3 to 14. Add two more for the Dapeng Peninsula (beaches, a 600-year walled city, and the 867 m Qiniang summit). Five days is the comfortable maximum before repeat visits set in.
What is the best age to visit Shenzhen with children?
Any age from 3 to 14 works if you match the plan to the child. Toddlers do best at Shenzhen Bay, the parks and the museums; ages 5 and up enjoy Window of the World; ages 7 to 14 can join our camps; and fit pre-teens can attempt the Qiniang summit from October to April. Under-3s should stay on the flat, shaded routes.
Is Dapeng worth the trip from central Shenzhen?
Yes, but only as an overnight. The peninsula is about 90 minutes away, with beaches, a 600-year-old walled city and coastal walks our own groups love. As a day trip it wastes too much time in transit; stay one or two nights and let the pace drop.
How much does a Shenzhen family trip cost?
Urban attractions run roughly 99 to 230 RMB per person — Window of the World from 99 RMB at night, the Safari Park about 199 RMB for an adult, Xiaomeisha Ocean World about 230 RMB. Shenzhen Bay and Dapeng ancient city are free. Local food is cheap, so a family of three can eat for under 200 RMB a meal. Our camps are priced per season, so ask for a quote.
Can Qumogu plan the whole Shenzhen trip for us?
We run 11 camps and 40 guided journeys for ages 3 to 14, from a 6-day Shenzhen camp at our Dapeng base to desert and island camps. Tell us your child's age, dates and interests and we propose a programme with English-speaking leaders, CE-UIAA-certified gear and a 7 to 1 safety ratio. Day visits and the itinerary above are easy to do on your own.
